I’m Running for Governor
I’m Maxine Durand, and I’m running as an independent candidate for Idaho governor in the 2026 election.
As a career public servant and lifelong Idaho citizen, I’ve seen firsthand the many challenges our state faces, including an increasing cost of living crisis, chronic low wages across the board, and threats to public education and healthcare. I believe that every Idahoan deserves a decent job with a good wage, a robust education, and access to healthcare and housing as a human right, not as a privilege. I refuse to believe that this viewpoint is radical, when it’s really just common sense.
I won’t pretend that there aren’t problems with how our government is run. Believe me, as a public administrator with more than a decade of service under my belt, I am the first person to call out when things aren’t working the way they should be. But, I am also not going to tell you that the solution is to burn it all down.
It is time for Idahoans to look to the future and demand more from our government institutions. It is time we fight for what we deserve.
My full list of policy priorities can be found on the “Platform” page of my website, but here are some highlights:
- Support for Idaho’s working families in the form of free universal daycare and pre-K, and an expansion of our public school system to ensure that Idaho’s high school graduates have the best quality of education possible, and finish high school with at least an associate’s degree. Every Idahoan of every age has a right to reach their potential, and our greatest investment is in our people.
- Universal housing and an Idaho Medicare for All program to ensure that every Idahoan has a roof over their head and has access to the healthcare they need as a fundamental human right. Idahoans deserve security in knowing that they will not lose everything because rent is unaffordable or because they or a family member got sick.
- Initiatives to help Idaho’s small farmers, including family farms and first-time farmers alike, so that we respect and continue Idaho’s rural and agricultural legacy. We must be a haven for the working farmer, not factory farms.
- Investing in high tech, science-based industry, so that Idahoans are at the forefront of technological advancement. This is to ensure not only that Idaho will be at the forefront of innovation, but also to keep Idaho’s brightest minds in our state by creating opportunities for our most educated, creative, and inventive.
- Free, universal hunter’s safety, and an expansion of the program to include CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Management so that every Idahoan who chooses will have the knowledge and skills necessary to aid during a crisis, and the framework to act alongside first responders without interfering. The goal is to ensure that not only will your Second Amendment rights be protected, but that you will have active support in meeting the responsibilities those rights require.
- Last, and possibly most important – Term Limits for all Idaho elected positions. We cannot allow our state to be stifled by the same tired thinking and the same special interests year after year. Enacting term limits ensures that at the very least, we can limit the influence of any one politician, and require new leaders to step up to the challenge of running our democracy.
These policies are, I believe, vital to Idaho’s success and to improve the lives of all Idahoans – but, to be clear, not everything I’ve included in my platform is something the governor can do with the stroke of a pen. As your governor, I will do everything in my power to get my policies passed into law, but it will take your continued support to help me move the conversation forward and hold our state legislators accountable.
I am your candidate, but this campaign is not just about me. After the 2026 election, all the assets of my campaign will be turned over into creating a new organization, a new movement, to recruit and support independent candidates for Idaho elected positions at all levels. My efforts, my donor list, my campaign volunteers, and the momentum I create will all be given back to the people, so that anyone who hears the call to public service can answer.
Wherever I go, others must follow – and when I can go no further, all must carry on. This campaign is my love letter to my public service career, but also, it is a call for a political revolution the likes of which we have not seen since our country’s founding.
If you believe like I do that now is the time to take Idaho in a new direction, then I am asking you to stand with me, shoulder to shoulder, as we work together to make our vision a reality. This is our moment.

I am also an independent. You caught my ear when you said, I am a Public Servant. So many have lost that understanding of what it means to be a politician. To many are interested in promoting themselves rather than than the needs of the people.

I’m all for changing the governor because he is a straight up POS but do not change the dynamic of what makes Idaho great. We work, fish, hunt, shoot guns for fun. Take care of our families and so on. You need to focus on what the people need most. We need to increase min wages without increasing taxes on homeowners because the cost of living is outrageous right now. Also, don’t drop thousands of ice agents in our state when they’re are hardworking people doing jobs that Americans are not going to do which will impact our yield of food sources on farms etc legalize marijuana who cares about it, tax it and count up the profits to put towards our crappy roads and education system

I agree, Lauren. One of the best governors in the state was also Democrat: Cecil Andrus. He worked across the aisle with Republicans to get the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area created in 1975. I grew up in Boise in the 1970s and early 1980s, and my father deeply admired Andrus and worked on his campaign.
I cannot believe that even a few Idahoans can even think of voting in a Trans Socialist for Governor! I have lived in this state for 65 years it is my home! I think you may want to pack up and move to another state like maybe Oregon, where idiots are accepted! We do not want you in as Governor or any other job in this State! Go away Durand!
